Chapter 1 of 3

What is SEO?

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. It is the practice of optimizing your website so that it ranks higher in search engine results pages (SERPs) like Google, Bing, and Yahoo. The higher your page ranks, the more organic (free) traffic you get.

Why SEO Matters

  • 93% of online experiences begin with a search engine.
  • Organic search drives 53% of all website traffic.
  • SEO leads have a 14.6% close rate, compared to 1.7% for outbound leads.
  • It's a long-term, cost-effective marketing channel.
Key Insight

SEO is not about tricking Google — it's about making your content genuinely useful and easy for search engines to understand.

How Search Engines Work

Search engines follow a three-step process to deliver results:

The Search Engine Pipeline
🕷️
Crawling
Googlebot discovers pages by following links
📚
Indexing
Pages are analyzed and stored in Google's index
🏆
Ranking
Algorithms determine the order of results

SEO vs. Paid Ads

While paid ads (Google Ads) give you instant visibility, SEO builds sustainable, compounding traffic over time. Most clicks go to organic results — only about 6% of clicks go to paid ads.
